I know intake runner length is very important in a NA engine but for a
turbo charged engine does the intake runners need to be the same length
or does it matter? If they don't, it opens up some additional
possibilities for intercooler placement.

It probably helps to reduce the BSFC in the turbo engine.
Mazda used tuned manifolds in all the turbo engines it built
right through 2004.

However I agree with you. An inter cooler incorporated into
the intake manifold is a neat way to go. Here is a tuned side port version
but it will also work with a p-port.

We are sold out and no plans to make any more.
They only fit the older 4 port engines. They don't fit the most common
six port engines or either the low power or the high power RX8 engine.

Anyway it is cheaper, better and easier to make a p-port
intake manifold. The side port castings required a lot of hand work fitting
tubes to them and tig welding the tubes.

The rotary is real easy to take apart and put back together.
We demo that at Sun n Fun each year. Takes about 15 minutes to take it
apart. It can be put back together in less than an hour with a little
practice. Cleaning the rotor takes the most time. I suggest get a
junk yard engines and practice on that.

If you can't bore the holes in the rotor
housings my next door hangar neighbor can do it for about $150 for two.
The p-port actually requires less work to make than the old side port manifolds.
If you don't want to do it yourself Mazdatrix will build the p-port engine for you.
You send them the bored rotor housings. I have not checked with them lately
but they may now also bore the rotor housings for people.
They will run the engine on the test bench for free after they build it.
They also have a dyno if you wanted it dynoed.
