Hi Paul,
I went to the website a few days ago. I'm on "dial-up" and the home page
immediately began downloading.....and downloading.....and downloading. With
all the pix on the first page it was taking forever. After 3 or 4 minutes (a
long time in brouser land) I stopped the download and went away. I'm
probably not the first or only site visitor to get discouraged and wander
off to "quicker gratification". Bottom line: Is there any way to speed
things up? Perhaps a separate "Home" page, then selectable pix from
"thumbnail" shots? Perhaps much less resolution on the initial pix with an
option to download finer resolution? The partially downloaded info was nice
but if a visitor doesn't stick around long enough, the opportunity to
present the rotary is lost. Dave M


Sorry about that Dave. The old site was like that with mostly text on the
front page. It would load quick.
Where do you live? Is high speed internet unavailable?

Hi Paul,
I'm about 8nm E of Richmond Va as the crow flys, but a world away as far as
population centers go. DSL stops about 3 miles away and for the last 2 years
I've pestered every Verizon rep I could get on the phone to no avail. The
unsaid story is that if there's not enough population in the area, they're
just not bringing the service out here no matter how much I beg. Remember
all the promises to Congress? "Give us the permits for the cities and of
course we'll take care of the country folk." Well the thoughtful people in
D.C. forgot to make them promise when. So, us country folk get to stare at
half  websites a lot. BTW: I can't even download your E-mail in 12 seconds!
If I sound bitter, I'm not. I'm ENVIOUS

Have you checked in your area for "Wireless Internet Access"
providers (WISP's).  There may be someone who has setup a radio
link that will allow you to get relatively high speed Internet
(appx. 1 Mb/s).  They have an antenna on a nearby tower that's
hard-wired to an Internet access point.  You have a
corresponding antenna at your place (about 1' x 2') that handles
the signal between the WISP and your modem.  I've helped to
install one of these and they work very well.  In a mountainous
area, they can be quite effective.

   Another way to go is with DirecWay or DishNet (satellite).
I've used DirecWay and it too works pretty well (about 1 Mb/s
max.).  The major difference between DirecWay and DishNet is
that DishNet uses a telephone modem for the uplink.  DirecWay
uses the satellite radio for the up and down-link.  Uplink
speeds are about 250 Kb/s.

   The big issue is the price.  Installation is a couple
hundred bucks and monthly service is (was) about $65.00.

   I had a terrible time getting FIOS (10 Mb/s) into our
neighborhood here in FL.  I resorted to writing to Verizon's CEO
and submitting signatures from over 50 local residents,
demanding better service.  I suppose it didn't hurt to copy the
letter to the Board of Supervisors, the FL Public Service
Commission, the local papers and TV stations and as many others
as I could think of...!  Eventually, after 15 years of
sub-standard telephone service only (> 20 Kb/s), we all have
FIOS and have all dumped DirecWay -- there were about five of us
on that system.
