Many thanks guys for your explanation.

Would it help if I put my foot down on the accelerator pedal before starting the engine or would that have a worse effect?  One engineer at Mazda told me to do it but after another visit and another engineer I got a completely opposite story.

Don't put your foot down all the way or it won't start.
It should start with your foot not on the throttle.
