I am talking real hard drives.USB version are up to 500 Gig

I'm using a WD 1TB SATA drive in an Antec MX-1 external case.  The case
has
a cooling fan with under/over airflow and supports drives up to 1.5TB.
It
has USB 2.0 and eSata connections.  I'm able to move files between Vista,
 XP
  Pro, and Debian boxes.

Just about everyone has 1TB USB external drives
  http://www.nextag.com/1tb-external-hard-drive/compare-html - what doesn't
  work?

I'll look into that one Andy. Thanks

Have you tested them with Linux? I bought a USB 500 Gb drive and it worked
 up to
100 Gb and then  refused to store any more.

Paul - do you know how your drive is formatted?

My 1TB drive is a Western Digital WL1000GS A3272 SATA drive.  It was a
second drive inside one of my Vista boxes for a while and it's formatted
with NTFS.  I pulled it out the desktop box and dropped it into the Antec
external case as is - no reformat, no jumpers, no mods.  It has just over
600GB on it - everything from small text files to DVD ISOs.  I use it
between four boxes - two VISTA (connected via both eSATA and USB 2.0), two
XP Pro (eSata and USB 2.0) and a Debian (LINUX) box via USB 2.0.

On the Linux box it automounts and all 600GB of data is available. I have
full access to manipulate the files - chmod, chown, move, copy, make and
delete directories, etc.

Your drive access challenge could be related to file system, but is
probably related to the chipset used by the IDE- or SATA-USB interface.

Here's one source of compatibility data - the Netgear ReadyNAS is a Debian
Linux box: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=89
