Yes I know. Way back in the early days a guy by the
name of Lou Ross put a Mazda rotary in a Mooney.
At the time the Mazda had a distributor that stuck
up several inches higher than the engine so Lou rotated the
the engine 90 degrees to get it under the cowl. He had
no other choice.

Since that time the crank angle sensor has been lowered and
there is now no height advantage to rotating the engine.

I am a great believer in the engineers
that designed the Mazda engine oil drain back system
and they had their reasons for designing the oil drain back
system the way it is. The other area that could be a problem
is the main bearing drain backs.

It is not nice to mess with mother gravity :)

What's the banana effect?  I always thought that those passages were for
emissions and EGR valve.  For our purposes do they need to be plugged?

Yes it does do that in the normally aspirated engine but not in the
turbo engines.

The banana effect is when one side of the engine is cool and the other
side is hot the engine tends to distort into the shape of a banana.
Exhaust gas is circulated around the cool side of the engine
to warm it up. That is the same reason the water goes in the hot side
of the engine and comes out the cool side.

No need to plug them.

On this note, is it very complicated to convert a 20b to be all attitude
capable, or is it already?
Im not really talking about sustained inverted flight, but a few seconds
of negative G and some fun
and games.

As far as I know nobody has done it yet. Perhaps nobody has tried.
A few seconds negative G would work with a dry sump oil system.

Sustained inverted might be a real problem.
