Hi Paul, I enjoyed your article about the turbo compound engines in
the August issue of Kitplanes.? I agree that it is time for someone
to reintroduce the turbocompound engine.? In 1963 I was an engineering
technician on a turbocompound two-stroke cycle engine at McCulloch
Motors Advanced Development Division.? There is an SAE paper on this
project by Jim Dooley and Perry Krackenberg published around 1964 or
maybe later.? I had a copy but now I cannot locate it.

Another engine that was a technical success but not a commercial
success because it was too late was the Napier Nomad two-stroke
cycle diesel turbocompound.??

This was a ported engine as was the McCulloch two stroke.

The McCulloch did not achieve great BSFC because it was a gasoline
spark engine using a regenerative air pump (also known as a drag
pump) for scavenging as well as exhaust gas recovery.? But it was
simple with fewer moving parts.? The architecture of the engine
doomed the engine from the start but the concept was sound.

engines?

EAA did a story on it eon's ago.

Was this in conjuction with or a seperate project to the turbocompounding?
