Paul,
Back when you were talking about running a Holley 2300, a method was
mentioned for leaning with that carb that didn't use an O2 sensor.  I
vaguely remember it as a bolt-on to the bowl?  Anyone try this combo yet?

Some people have used in with Ford and GM V6 engines.

Gary Spencer used the Holley 500 CFM 2 barrel with the leaning block
in a direct drive aluminum Ford V8 in a Long EZ quite successfully for
awhile.
It was about the only canard that could keep up with Klaus
in the Jack Pot races.

I don't know what happened to it. That was few years ago.
About 2007. I have not heard of it since. My guess is it self
destructed and Gary gave up. V8's are OK for about 300 hours more
or less.

The Spencers were at Jackpot last year or the year before - I can't
remember which.  They seemed to be doing fine with it.  If they were
having problems, they weren't talking about them.

I saw them in 2007. Was that the year you saw them?
People in general never talk about their failures. They think
it reflects badly on them. They are wrong. Unfortunately I wish
that were not so as we learn as much from failure as we do
from success.

The automotive V8 is not designed to develop more than about
50 HP continuously. Better materials, like aircraft quality
steel parts and forged pistons only go so far. The fundamental
design problem is the bore spacing. It took Rolls Royce 12 years
to get the Merlin to live for just several hundred hours which
was enough for combat conditions.

Unfortunately automotive V8s fail in the hand grenade mode without
warning. The TBO should be mandated on automotive V8 engines at
300 hours so fatigue cracks can be detected before it is too late.

Orenda spent millions and got the TBO up to 1200 hours but
the firewall forward package weighed 1000 pounds and they
went bankrupt.

Dozens of others have tried and failed over the past 50 years or so.
I know one other V8 project where over 2 million dollars was spent.
