Or even a welded up bell housing from thin sheet metal.  Or furnace
brazed sheet metal.  The bell housing is a relatively simple shape..
The only hard part is that it's big and there is a major weight
savings from using thin, relatively high modulus material in its
construction..

I think this is something like what Matt had in mind.
Not a bad idea.

Hogged out of solid block as Jeff suggested you could move the
rubber cups back closer to the engine CG.

Yes..  Along those lines.  It seems like you could use thinner
material if you used bent sections to stiffen it.  The pieces the cups
attached to should have a flange along the edge to keep them from
collapsing.
