Hard drive 2 does not work

I used GParted to format the 2nd drive and and it shows up
in KDisk and GParted. see the attached screen shots.


    It also shows up on the desktop but I am unable to copy files
    to it.

Another tidbit of info

If I plug in a different type of USB stick in Ubuntu 9 it shows up on the desktop as mounted
but apparently it is not really mounted as I cannot copy files from that either.

If the stick is plugged in before I boot up it works fine.

Is this a bug in Ubuntu 9? I have been doing that for years in Fedora 8
