I got the DOS USB support to work sort of
  but I can't find the drive letter for the USB

Paul,

You need to use a computer that allows for USB Booting.
That was done around '06 for most systems.   If you have
an older PC or laptop, that doesn't have the bios that
allows booting from a USB device, the ASPI manager won't
work.

I checked that Tom. It does indeed have USB support in the
BIOS.

I have been there but I think they want to sell you something.
There is so much free stuff out there that I don't want to take
the risk of buying something and then not having it work.

Georg provides a wealth of DOS USB program source written in
Power BASIC. Now I just need to get in touch with him.

For some strange reason it crashes the VIA EPIA-M mother board.
Perhaps I need to run it before anything else as it appears
to be a tsr.
