Does anyone know how thick the nitriding is on the cast iron housings? I
am
lapping the irons by hand with permatex valve grinding compound and want
to
know if i have gone too far. thanks for any help

Only a couple of thou. I think it is .003.

Actually .003 inches would be a very thick nitride. Some of my old sources
indicate .0005-.0015 as typical.

You can buy a hardness tester from some of the machine shop
supply houses.

Paul,
That thickness is for the gas nitride process BTW. I don't think anybody
can use the old cyanide process due to environmental concerns. (Justifiable
ones at that.)
