This is a well kept secret and a great Museum.

The Ford Model A engine used in the Pietenpol was
uniquely suited to aircraft use. It was over designed
long before the bean counters got the last nickel
out of automotive engines. It has a huge
200 cubic inch displacement for its modest 40 HP making it
suitable for direct drive aircraft use. The ratio of power
to displacement was .2. Or 20% of the displacement in cubic
inches.

So a 5 L 305 ci Chev V8 might be good for 61 HP in aircraft
use. Coincidently that is about the average power
requirements for a Corvette :)

When it comes to light aircraft piston engines
there is no replacement for displacement.
