jd,   I looked into changing to OS 16.6 this time around but didn't locate
any large SCSI hard drives.  Tiger direct had 149 Gb  fugi and Hitachi as
the largest with a price of $569 each. The first computers I assembled were
all SCSI drives with windows OS and were very fast compared to PCI based
computers. The current OS6.*.* doesn't support SATA or IDE hard drives and
AMD chip sets are problematic as well. Nearly all of my CAD and CAM software
has a Mac installer on the install DVD although they are not as well
developed and bug free as the windows version.  There is a version past SP3
of Windows XP called "Nemesis" which I beta tested 5 years ago before vista
was released.

Among other things it would create drivers for devices if you
didn't have one, and  if a virus was detected   would go back to the sender
and encrypt their FAT 32 and the backup FAT as well..  The first notice
about a virus was  "A virus was detected, the senders computer has been
destroyed" It was a large program like the Debian release of Linux. There
are a lot of features built into these programs but not accessible to the
user because you don't know what they are or how to access them. My recent
problem occurred when windows did 46 updates and windows explorer quit. The
repair install then wrote over the folder names of all my data files making
them invisible. The Hitachi hard drive I was using had been chattering like
a chipmunk since I got it and I had a western digital ordered to replace it.
Possibly I have had my first hard drive failure, however it still runs and
allowed "Recuva' to recover the files  from it.

Another reason why I do not connect my Windows XP computer
to the Internet. It has not been updated since I bought
it about 5 years ago. It is still functioning.

The Ubuntu 9:04 I am currently using updates at least once
a week for about the last year. No problems so far.
