How does the engine look?
Do you have any guesses on why did it caught fire?

No question at all about why it caught fire -- those damn plastic ends on
the MSD fuel pumps snapped off & fuel was being hosed into the cowling
post
crash. The hottest part of the fire was right at the fuel pumps.
Terry was
trying to go around when he lost it - thus both pumps were on and
running at
impact.
I really think those MSD fuel pumps should not be used by anyone
because of
the plastic elements. As you'll remember, I dropped one & the plastic
shattered on that one too.
Rotor 1 is shot. The p-port got torn loose and shoved into the rotor
chamber while the engine was still turning. I expect to find the apex
seals
shattered & the chamber shot.
I cant get the damn e-shaft nut off so it will b a while before I get
around
to tearing it down.

I don't know why we have to crash to find out stuff like this fuel pump.
I was advocating these things until this happened. I sent a copy of this

This P-port was one of our early epoxy bonded in versions. That was the
first and last one done like that. New ones are stainless steel welded
in.
It will take a direct axial heavy impact to shove one of those into the
rotor housing.

I don't think that is high pressure EFI. I think that is
throttle body injection at 15 psi.

What you are looking for is a true roller vane pump that will lift
a head of fuel. Important for low wing airplanes.

The Bosch Cis efi fuel pumps are all steel with threaded bosses for the
fuel lines. They are well tested millions made. Some even have a check
valve in the outlet. Roller vane.
Very high quality. I mentioned this on this web site many years ago.
No one paid any attention.

You guys really should be using the pump recommended by the maker of the
injection system (Tracy Crook) - the Walbro 394 or equavelent. They are
inexpensive, all metal, have threaded fittings for any type of adapter,
have
a built-in spring loaded check valve, and weigh only a pound. They have
worked well for me for 500 hrs. It turns out that they also made the
perfect solution for a pump for my smoke system. So my plane flies with 3
of them.

As far as I can tell the old Walbro are gone.
There are other roller vane pumps on the market.

Some suppliers may still have inventory.
If you go on the Walbro web site one is hard pressed to find
the product if at all. I think the Walbro was of the gerotor
type however I never took one apart. The far cheaper
plastic impeller type works fine if immersed in the fuel
tank which is universal practice these days in cars.
Just don't run out of fuel.
I suspect that one would fail very quickly if not in fuel
as the plastic impeller would melt.
Jeggs does not carry7 Walbro but several companies are selling
the metal roller vane Airtex under their own name which I think is the
source for MSD.
