 The GP-5 being flown by Lee at Reno this year had an all aluminum small
 block chevy in it.
 Dry sump with electronic fuel injection. Lost a couple of pistons and had
a
 mayday landing.
 Cool looking airplane, but too many moving parts in the engine!

 The key is spend a little time studying the strength of
 materials mechanical engineering course taught in every college.

Amen!  Just finished that course up myself.
You'll need a Statics course to make the Strengths class meaningful  and a
Dynamics course to make it apply to engines.

So why hasn't someone done it yet-put a boosted/nitro 20B in a race
airframe? Begs the question.

Not to nit pick, but what about those Allisons, Merlins still racing (and
winning)?

Those are aircraft engines. Apples and oranges as far as materials
are concerned. In war use they barely lasted 400 hours.
