I've been a lurker here since '04. I started working on my pilots
license in 07 and stalled with work and family responsibilities. Still
with many rotary dreams and aspirations.
I came across an interesting project that upon which, perhaps, some of
the cohort here may wish to comment.

I'm wondering if anyone has a good
cost/performance recommendation for a street/trackday longitudinal
transaxle that would play well with the rotary.
Hewland/Quaife/Xtrac are
progressively astronomical. anything more modern than the venerable (er
lowly?) VW?
That is to specifically work with the 13b/renesis

Michael,
The Audi S4 Quattro trans works well. All you do is remove the torsen
differential from the back of the transmission and replace it with a
solid
coupler to drive the front diff only.
The Quattro trans works by having a hollow gear shaft with the front
drive
being transferred through the center of the hollow gear shaft in the
trans.
The torque is then split by the torsen differential that connects the
gear
shaft to the rear output shaft and the front drive shaft that goes back
through the hollow gear shaft. The coupling then couples the hollow
shaft to
the inner shaft directly.
This arrangement if for a mid engine configuration with the transaxle
behind
the engine and has been used behind V8's powering Ford GT-40
replica's and
other kit cars.
The Audi A4 Quattro trans can be done the same way for lower hp
applications. this one will hold up to 200 hp in this configuration
as long
as you don't try to make up all your lap times with harsh shifting. The
advantage to this trans is far less weight with about 15 lbs less
rotating
inertia.
