I just received the RX8 coil from Advanced Auto Parts.I did not believe that
I was going to receive them since I read that a lot of people tried to
purchase them online but were told that this item can not be ordered
online.I went to Advanced Auto Parts web site and ordered 4 coils.I was
surprised that the order went through without a problem.However,I thought
that I will never receive them instead I will get an email of apology for a
web site error.But to my surprise I received them today and they are the
right coils.The box states Intermotor part #E1001.The funny thing is that I
live in a US territory in the Pacific called Saipan and Advance Auto Parts
has to ship them thousands of miles away from the mainland US.By the way the
cost was $24.00 per coil and $12.14 for priority mail shipping for 4
coils.What a deal.

Someone needs to tell the people that answer the Advanced Auto Parts web
site phone :) I have an RX8 coil heat sink for you. I'll come up with a
place to mount it in the firewall forward package.

Actually somebody has to tell the people that maintain the web site at
Advance Auto Parts,cause I understood from the emails that I read that most
of the problems they encountered were ordering through the web site.At any
rate if you want the coils I be glad to order them for you.

 I am not really sure if it has a trigger or not the only thing I noticed
 is that it has 3 terminal input plug.Have you tried to order them
 directly from Advance Auto web site lately.Things might have changed
 since before.If you still can not order them,I will be glad to do it for
 you.The cost as I looked lately was $26.99 per coil.The shipping to me
 is about $14.00.I do not know how much will be the shipping to NZ,but I
 will inquire if you still want them.I also do not know if you have to
 pay tax in NZ or not but that will be something that you have to deal
 with at your end.Cheers.

 The trigger is built in. It requires a positive going  5 volt low current
 pulse that is only 3 ms long to work at high RPM. If you want it for
 aircraft use you should use a heat sink as they are not designed for a
 continuous 6000 RPM.

Hi Paul

What do the Star Mazda cars use for the coils.
Are they stock like the rest of the engine, and do they have experience of
coils dying?

The 1st gen used a distributor and maybe MSD.
I am not sure of the brand of coil.

The 2nd gen uses RX8 engines so my guess is RX8 coils.
If they did I am sure they switched to the new version about 2006 to 2007. A
race car spends some time braking so the RPM is not always 8500 RPM.
Here is a histogram of a Le manns lap.
The Le Manns course has one of the longest straits in the world. I know the
3 rotors in the Rolex series uses heat sinks on the coils.

Where do we get the connectors for these coils? And will you make your heat
sink avail here?

Yes If I get enough demand I'll supply Jeff with the heat sink dwg
and he can make and sell them if he wants. I am still looking for
connectors.

It is possible to make them out of nylon on a NC mill.
I am still working on that.
