Subject: linear actuator feedback position sensor?

Does anyone know of a sensor that determines position, feeds back a signal
to both allow position and preselection of motion? I am trying to fabricate
a flap handle that when put in a position (say 30 deg flaps) actuates the
motor; the sensor senses when the motor (flap) is there and then shuts off.
Seems to me cowl flap linear actuators might do that? But I already have a
motor and a way to sense flap position. I just need to feed it back and
control it at the flap handle.

Any potentiometer will work as a sensor.

So try a series of resistors whose sum equals the sensing pot in the linear actuator. The value of individual resistors equal the desired percentage of travel in relation to the value of the pot. Parallel taps at each resistor junction feed selector switch. Both switch and sensing pot feed a comparator. (you will probably have to fiddle with feed back gain to get a smooth stop) comparator output feeds a power stage that can reverse polarity. Just got up for work, no time to draw and scan a a schematic or look up an appropriat power stage. There might even be a kit from one of those hobbytronic kind of places.
Hope this helps.
Your results may vary.
