Brian, Dave, help!
I can't seem to get this adjusted. If I leave the nuts slightly loose
there is zero friction in the aileron action.
If I tighten either the front or rear ball joint
nuts noticeable friction is added to the control.
If this is described in the plans what page number?
BTW I changed Mike's bracket as I did not feel safe
with just a non locking jam nut on there with no
threads showing.

Well, i can't quite understand the situation from the pictures, but I
can say this, there should be no friction in the system from any of
those brackets, and the nuts should be secure. Maybe missing a washer
or two? It should be in the plans, though very occasionally you must do
things different than called out in the plans.

Have not seen drawings or pics, but where two bearings are used on a
single bolt,
check that a spacer goes between them.

Something must be crushing a bearing when tightened. Check that rod
ends are not binding or twisting. Rod end bearing might have seized.

The method of freeing up a seized rod end bearing as I recall is this-
place the rod bearing down with the body of the rod bearing supported in
such a way that the subsequent force is transmitted through the ball
into the body and not to the supporting surface directly. Take a soft
mallet and rap on the ball, turn over the rod end and rap on the ball on
the other side. You should be able to free up the ball or ruin the
peice and then just replace the damn thing completely.
BUT........
Also, if the joint could be situated in such a way (Twisted) that when
you tighten the through nut the body of the joint is squeezed against
the bracket, thereby causing friction. Make sure that when you tighten
the nut on the ball joint body that it is not twisted in such a way as
to contact the bracket. Was the nut on the body tightened AFTER the
control column bracket was in place, or before the bracket was
installed? Tightening the nut after could twist it in just this way.
So- the ball should move freely in the body, or the body is twisted and
contacting the control column bracket when you tighten the through bolt
and nut.

I checked the ball joint. They were OK.
The orientation was also OK as they have a hex socket.
