After a couple of initial runs on my Renesis, I set the power at about
2,000 rpm and got up on the wing to inspect the connections for leaks and
general condition while running. I noted that the flywheel seemed a little
fuzzy. By that I mean it didn't have a very crisp edge while it was
revolving. I shut the engine down and put a straight edge up against the
side of the starter ring and turned the prop. I noted a 1/8" difference
between one side and the other, thus the "fuzziness". I figured the
flywheel was bent somewhere so I ordered a new one, since I was very
concerned about the harmonics that might be caused by the wobble at 7,000
rpm. As I studied the new and the old flywheel I noted that there didn't
seem to be much precision in the attachment of the starter ring and the
flywheel. As I measured several areas there were easily 1/16"
differences.....not the close tolerance I expected on something that would
spin at 7.000 rpm. The starter ring is welded to the flywheel with about
five one inch welds....again not very precise. There was no evidence of
balancing like shaving off or drilling metal on the flywheel. My conclusion
is that, apparently it's not that important because both flywheels are
similarly measured. Do you have any experience with this?

I think you are talking about the so called flex plate.
First put a dial indicator on the flex plate mounting surface and check
for run out. If that is OK bolt it on and C clamp a steel channel to the
flex
plate and straighten it until it tracks true.

Hi, they're not called flex plates for nothing. A Wankel does not excite
a flex plate much, you should see how they can move on a 3 or V-6. A light
weight aluminum fly wheel or a reinforced flex plate would be better.
