I am researching, looking for a suitable Rotary engine for an aircraft.
I would like to subscribe to your newsletter and also ask if you know
of a mfg. that makes a rotary engine that weighs 80-100 lbs and delivers
150+ hp to a propeller turning 2500 rpm.
Thanks
Lyn Amestoy
You have set HP per pound requirement unrealistically high.
Is that the bare engine weight with out gear box or the firewall forward
weight?
Wankel rotary engines usually run about .7 HP per pound firewall forward.
With a 3:1 gear box, all aluminum construction and and about 8000 RPM
takeoff you
might achieve as much as 1.2 HP per pound.
Small aircraft piston engines like the O-200 are .5 HP per pound,
The O-320 is about the same ratio.

Paul,
Paul,
Rebuilding my single rotor. All aluminum components. High compression
rotor.
P port. Just waiting for the race balance at Mazdatrix, then final
assembly
here in Utah. 3.17 Ross drive. How much Hp might be possible at 8000 rpm,
takeoff limitation?
Lewis.
Good work Lewis!! My guess is close to 150 HP.
You lucky dog to have a 3:17 Ross. I would love to have one for the RV4.
Makes sure it has the sun gear thrust bearing mod. Also look into swapping
out the 4 pinion planet carrier for a 6 pinion version and use Tracy's
torque
idolater instead of the spring clutch center. Or find a Porsche unit with
rubber
bushings. I am not sure that will fit the Ross input shaft spline so check
that first.
Paul Lamar
Who does the mod?
Lewis.
Try jeff doddridge <

If he does not want to to it ship it to me and I will tell
my next door neighbor machinist Jim Poole how to do it.
Paul Lamar
Thanks very much. I'll get started.
Lewis.
I forgot to mention the reason for doing this. The helical gear thrust
is transfered to the Mazda thrust bearing which is not up to it.
Tracy destroyed a thrust bearing early on.
Paul Lamar
Jeff is willing. He will get in touch with you.
In addition to the sru, what other components will he need?
Lewis.
Paul
Last time I talked to Slauson they recommended the 4 pinion due to
manufacturing issues on the 6 pinion. Would a single rotor require
the heavier 6 pinion?
If anyone has a Ross to donate for the shipping I would see what
modifications are needed for the various ratios. (I have a 1:87 G.A.P.
used for comparison on what NOT to do) :)
Dan F
Slauson does not carry the 6 pinion. You might get it here.
