Paul,
Is there anyone on this forum that has used the GM coils on
their engines that can help
me? I have annoyed Tracy until he will be pleased to see that last of me as
he is on holidays. SO
far I have the following information from him. That the connections on all
the GM coils are the
same, D 580, D 581 and D 585. The male plug in fitting is the same for the
D581 and the D585, but
different to the D 580. Then in Tracy;s installation guide on page 25 is
shows the D580 coil with
the external fastening latch at the bottom and it says that pin A is on the
left. Then over the
page on page 26 it shows two photos of the coil D 581. The photo on the
right shows the connections
and if you put the external fastening latch at the bottom like the coil D580
on the previous page it
says that pin A is on the right on coil D501 (page 26) Can anyone clarify
which pin or terminal on
the D 585 coil or igniter is terminal A Has anyone used any GM igniter (580
to 585) and got it
actually wired in that can clarify the above as once I epoxy the pins it
will be too late to change
Neil
I have them in the RV4.
Don't epoxy them in. Use RTV aka silicone rubber. You can pull it out
if it is wrong.
Use the molex female round split pins to make connections. These are the
same
power supply connectors used on computer mother boards. Go to a computer
repair
place and get a junk power supply and salvage the pins. Use heat shrink
tubing
over the pins so they don't short out.
Take some pictures of the coils you have so we can be sure you have the
right
coils. The connector locations on the coils vary. The LS2 D585 and LS1 D580
pin
outs are swapped end to end.
The thing to do is get three AAA 1.5 volt dry cell batteries and connect
them in series.
Tape them together with duct tape. You should then have a 4.5 volt trigger
voltage.
Wire up the coil you think the way it should go on the bench. There are only
two
ways. Ground pins on the ends. Ground on right end or on the left end.
Plug in a coil wire with a spark plug on the other end. Ground the spark
plug metal part.
Ground the negative end of your 4.5 volt dry cell battery. Use a 12 volt
car battery
to power the coil. When you momentarily touch the 4.5 volts to the trigger
input pin
the spark plug should fire. If not it is wired backwards. Swap ends.
I sent you the pin outs dwgs. Here they are again.

Paul,
Once again my thanks. By the photos I have the middle coil
(photo of 3) called the LS2 and is the one you have the photo of with the
cooling fins beside the connector. Can easily do the test you describe, so
finally can proceed.
Neil.
OK I see the problem. The LS2 D585 is swapped end for end compared to
Tracy's LS1 D580 sketch in the EC2 doc.
Try this schematic.

Paul,
RTV will cause corrosion on electrical connections, I have been told. I
think that there are silicone products that are compatible, but RTV per se.
is not.

Yes non corrosive silicone.
Bill, if you have a Tracy EM can you make a movie of the display panel while
you are flying? Me and Michael Hart are curios about the rotary powered
KIS Cruiser performance.
