I was thinking how easy it would be to build
 an auto land system.

 Anybody know how to program Android apps?

 All you need is a tablet with a USB port and moving map software.

 Then you build a pressure altimeter using a single
 chipper and a pressure sensor with a USB interface.

 The GPS is built into the the tablet.
 You set the coordinates of the end of the runway you want to land
 on and that will put you within 15 feet.

 The last little bit is done with a ultrasonic back up sensor.

Actually, I don't.  I like landing airplanes by use of my hands, feet, and
eyes.  It's fun.

OK Cat IIIB but low cost :) Of course it is not legal but who is
going to bust you landing on a private strip with no ILS.

Hands, feet, and eyes work until you can't see and there is no ILS.

So, how're you going to use this approach system in practice?  I guess
in scenarios where you can VFR-on-top - requiring no IFR clearance,
and knowing that the cloud layer is thin enough to not conceal someone
else trudging through the murk, you could safely (a relative term)
punch into the clouds.  Pretty limited unless your chosen field
regularly has a thin layer..

I guess the other way to use it would be to be flying on an IFR
clearance to a published fix (which you have designed as your initial
approach fix), ask for clearance to descend to
minimum-vectoring-altitude (ATC might not agree to it), and cancel IFR
once you get to the fix, and then fly your home-grown approach.

In a place where there isn't much of terrain or obstruction, I think
it would be workable.

Class G airspace allows IFR operations, but doesn't require any
control/clearance/radio.  Technically, I believe you are to remain
clear of clouds, but that's probably tough to enforce - especially in
a rural environment.
