1. If you are using Tracy's gear box it is a good idea
to use the 3rd gen RX7 13B high capacity oil pump.
2. If you are using a turbo make sure you have
separate oil lines from the main oil gallery in
the block going to both the turbo and Tracy's gear
box. Do not run one line and T it to both the turbo
and the gear box.

Sounds ominous.. Hopefully Dave has a runnable airplane for racing.
Good information though.
Matt-
OK . . . . Now how about some specifics? You seem to imply that Dave's
gearbox, or his turbo, or both, were getting insufficient oil lubrication.
What is the bottom line for Dave's RV-6?

I'll let Dave explain when he gets home on Monday.

Very bad day in Reno with the big crash. Just getting back to the camper
and trying to unwind.
Re: the gear box. Yes, it is true. Sometime during my qualifying run on
Tuesday, I had a catastrophic failure of my RD-1B gear drive. Fortunately,
it kept going through taxi home, but seized completely soon after shut down.
It had 600 hrs on it. There was obvious heat damage to the planet gears
that do not live in the oil bath (the upper 3 planets). The main bearings
for the prop shaft are frozen and we cant rotate it to get a hex wrench to
the retaining screws
This happened just before noon on Tuesday. By some miracle, Larry Childs
had a 1B on his work bench a few hundred miles away. Steve Senegal, another
race pilot, was kind enough to fly me out to pick up Larry's gear drive and
we had everything re-installed and ready to go for my Wednesday afternoon
heat.
Part of my problem was possibly an oil issue. Oil to the PSRU previously
came from an an-4 line and was shared with the turbo. So we also installed
a dedicated an-4 line coming from a higher pressure point in the oil system.
We also put a spray nozzle in to help keep the oil cooler (It climbed as
high as 210).
But now racing is done for the year. My thoughts are with the families of
the victims of the crash.
