Subject: Racing a Mazda rotary powered RV6

Most of these airplanes have piston engines with 2 to 5 times the
displacement of the Mazda 160 ci 13B Wankel yet Dave is competitive.

With a p-port, more streamlined intake manifold, max 2 rotor
turbo power   will go up from about the current 250 HP to about 300
HP at the same   45 inches of HG boost. Of course boost levels could
 go much higher as the

Wankel block is very robust indeed.

In car drag racing these turbo engine will develop well over 700
HP   however   that would take a change in gear ratio from the
 current 2.17:1 to more   than
3:1 so the engine can rev to its 10,000 or 11,000 RPM red line without
exceeding Mach 1 prop tip speed.

I suspect many of these turbo piston engines racing at Reno are
now using   NOS so the sky is the limit there.

Perhaps the next step is a cleaner airframe and a 3 or 4 rotor.

The picture captions are largely self explanatory.
The guy standing on the left in the fourth picture name is Red
and he was   Dr. Dave's teacher in anesthesiology as well as his
pilot CFI instructor.   He   has a Phd in oceanography as well.

As a result of the 229 MPH posted Dave has won the $1000 Everett Hatch
memorial prise for exceeding 220 MPH using a Wankel rotary engine
in an   air   race.   A past winner was Tracy Crook at 210 MPH.

That depletes the fund and raises the bar to 250 MPH assuming we
get new   donations. First we must beef up the RV tails to raise the
 VNE.

   Dave, Amazing accomplishment. Congratulations.

Paul, re: cleaner airframe suggestion . . . Anyone working on a
either a   Formula 1 or biplane powered rotary?

   Cheers, JL

   Formula 1 requires an O-200. I don't know about biplane. I have
not heard   anything. Come to think of it a Formula 1 airframe might
qualify for the   sports   class if it was a kit. The Sports rule
used to require 2 place but I don't   know if that is still true.

Bob Mears should be pretty close to first flight on his 3-rotor
   Supermarine
Spitfire.  That ought to shake up the Sports class at Reno.

   Mark S.

  What scale is the Spitfire?

  Van

  Van,

I think it is 3/4 scale.  Try a google search on "Supermarine Spitfire".
They have a web site.  Very cool airplane.

What is the power of the IO-720 powered Nemesis NXT? Are NXT's available? A
4
rotor turbo compound should give an easy and reliable 1200 to 1400 HP.
Depends
on the boost. When you can get 1200 out of a 3 rotor, a 4 ought to be no
problem with power recovery. My money says that would shake things up big
time!

Dale Davies

Hard to tell as most Reno aircraft engines are souped up by a company called
Lycon.

I had wondered about going to the IO-720.. My impression is that the
prop end of the IO-720 crankshaft is no bigger than an IO-540/IO-580
(though I could be wrong), which they are already breaking in the race
environment..  I'll be somewhat surprised if they can push all that
much more HP through the IO720 than they do the existing 6 cylinder
engines.  I guess the cylinders will survive better though.

Regards,

Matt-

No problem. If you break a crank they are only $30,000 to replace :)
Just the crank. Not the whole $100,000 engine:)
