Maybe I will come across as a total idiot for asking ... but has anyone
ever experimented with using the metal skin of an aircraft as a
radiator, or would the weight necessary to provide adequate cooling be
excessive?

Yes it was done in the 1930's on the Schneider cup racers.
It was a nightmare of leaks.

There were also experiments with steam cooling using skin sections as
condensers. Was not practical. Look for Heinkel 100.
