Paul,

I was recently mulling over an A-10 Warthog that was on static
display.  On the nose wheel I noticed a small servo and a matching
'ring gear' around the lower section of the strut that the nose wheel
assembly was attached to; i.e. the steering arrangement.  I'm wondering
if anyone has tried anything similar on a homebuilt to get away from having
a full swivel nose gear and overheated brakes when taxiing with a
significant
crosswind?

My Bellanca Viking has a simple nose gear arrangement, and it has
retractable gear. Its only Achilles heel is that the nose gear is direct
steer- no springs or bungees. Meaning, if you land in a crosswind and have
your foot down, when the nose gear hits thats the direction you are going.
And it happens really fast.

The solution is to land just above stall, and keep her nose up as long as
you can- usually it comes down at around 45 mph or so. Then center the
rudder, let her nose down and finish the roll out with the nose gear. I am
building a Wheeler Express, and am seriously considering using a similar
nose gear.
