The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe
Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign
oil.  The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503
billion barrels.  Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable...  at $107 a
barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5..3 trillion.
"When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their
jaws hit the floor..  They had no idea.." says Terry Johnson, the Montana
Legislature's financial analyst.  "This sizable find is now the
highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years," reports

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette.  It's a formation known as the Williston
Basin , but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' It stretches
from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada ..  For years,
U.  S.  oil exploration has been considered a dead end.  Even the 'Big
Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago.
However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's
massive reserves....  and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels.

And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost
Americans just $16 PER BARREL!  That's enough crude to fully fuel the
American economy for 2041 years straight.  And if THAT didn't throw you on
the floor, then this next one should - because it's from 2006!  U.  S.

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've
got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more
than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped.  That's more than all the proven oil
reserves of crude oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.  Don't
think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find?  Think again!
It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to.  Think OPEC just
might be funding the environmentalists?  Got your attention yet?  Now,

Not so simple. Correct, USA and other countries have vast reserves of
natural gas, and oil shale but are without the incentives to use it. The
oil
shales have been known about for a long long time. Rate of extraction is
the
problem. Horizontal drilling will increase that rate, but for USA to be
totally self sufficient on it's own energy sources, be they solar, hydro,
tidal, wind, geothermal or hydrocarbon requires planning on a national
scale. And years of time. In other words, the people have to realize which
energy path is most efficient.  Germany is doing this planning now. Every
time the US government tries to look at the BIG energy picture, some group
screams socialism. Somehow the words socialism, communism and dictatorship
became synonymous. They aren't.

The US national energy plan was started and abandoned during the Carter
administration. Vested interests aren't anti clean energy, they are pro
profit. If one is selling fuel on margin, it would behoove one's company to
sell at the highest price possible. Hence imported oil. Consumers have a
choice. Make your own energy. Buy an electric car.

Another point is world politics. By controlling oil sources (buying or
bullying), USA can support allies and affect economies of friends or foes.



Hydrocarbons shouldn't be burnt anyway.  They should be used for creating
products.

Frac-ing is a relative recent procedure that reduces the cost of extraction
and greatly expands supply.

BTW Doug how are the Japanese planning to generate all the juice over there
now that they
have decided to shut down all nuclear?

There is some doubt that oil really comes from fossil's.
What did the dinosaurs eat in the arctic and why is oil
found 8000 feet deep? How did the dead dinosaurs get down there?

You are starting to sound like Ms. Palin:) The arctic was tropical at one
time. You know--continental drift.  24,000 feet on the top of Mt. Everest
sea shells are found. It used to be in the Indian ocean. I suspect you are
correct about how oil is produced though.  The processes aren't just
anaerobic bacteria but something as simple as pyrohydrolysis.  Heat and
pressure in the vicinity of carbon and water.

Electric cars run on electricity.  Where you get the electricity can vary.
Choose a clean energy like solar and charge the car at home. Which energy
is
more efficient?  Which energy requires the least amount of energy to become
available to the user.  The technology is available only the will to
implement is lacking. This is the scientific field studying energy vectors
is called Emergy.

As for Japan's future energy, assorted alternative sources are expected to
fill in the gap. The main source will be one they have known about forever
and done little to capture - geothermal.  Take a guess on what percent of
California's energy comes from geothermal? Next is offshore wind, third
tidal currents, fourth PV. Several large utilities have already switched
their nuke steam driven turbines over to natural gas.  It's a stop gap
measure but natural gas is in abundant supply in the world compared to oil.

Choice of energy use vectors don't always makes sense until the hidden
subsides are revealed.Up to now the Japanese taxpayers have heavily
supported nuclear energy in the belief that it was a clean, cheap, and a
safe choice. Turns out it's none of the above. Cesium is collecting in
hotspots in downtown Tokyo now.  The three meltdowns in Fukushima are under
control but still under threat of further explosions.  5.0 strength
earthquakes are hitting the Fukushima area weekly.  Almost like it's a
target, Very very strange.

Then how come we find oil near the equator?

It doesn't make sense to go to wind, solar, geothermal until those are the
same price or cheaper than oil, hydro coal, or nat. gas. We will transition
over to whatever is cheapest or more economical. To intentional hamstring
ourselves while other countries are using the most economical source of
power is economic suicide. We have a hard enough time competing withour
labor costs, it's insanity to intentionally shoot ourselves in the other
foot by choosing more expensive energy just so we can feel morally
superior.


Besides, our family retained the mineral rights to the ranch in North
Dakota.

There was a recent poll taken on how Americans view our country's energy
policy at http://www.utexas.edu/know/2011/10/20/energy_poll/  Forty-three
percent think we're headed in the wrong direction while thirteen percent
think we're headed in the right direction.  Big surprise to the beaurocrats
in Wash. D.C.
