Robin forgot her pass word on the gmail account in her
 Asus android tablet and now she cannot get in to her email.

 She also has gmail on her mac but that was easy to fix
 by going on to the gmail web site. The same approach did
 not work on the tablet with the same new password did not
 work on the tablet.

 Any ideas on what could be wrong.

 I use earthlink and have several computers with the same email pass word.

 Since Linux is underneath android and I can access the command
 line where in android is this password stored?
 Send me private email if necessary.

 I also notice that I do not have root privileges so apparently
 the same pass word is used for that.

 If I type sudo it does not give the option of entering
 a password. In Ubuntu Linux it ask for a password and you put
 in the log in password. So how do you get root privileges do do
 programming?

 Robin did not have to enter a password other than
 for the gmail account when she first got it.

 To get super user privileges on android requires you to "root" it.
 Basically hack it. Google your exact unit and you can get instructions.
 Beware, one mis-step and you can make it impossible to boot up. They call
 it bricking, because after this its basically only good as a doorstop.

 I plan to root mine shortly to install Linux. I will let you know how it
 goes.

Oh great! Bricking you say. Even Asus cannot fix it?

What do you mean by exact unit? Is that the build unit number
under settings?

I called Asus in india and they said it was a goggle problem.
Hardware verses software finger pointing is back :)

So far I have not gotten in the google account as they are asking
things that only robin will know. She is elsewhere right at the moment.

More later as I go through this involved process.

As I understand it from the web site above the pass word is stored
someplace in plain text. Ypu would not happen to know where would you?
of course I might be denied access not being root :)

BTW Linux is in there is it not? Are you saying you are going
to install the Ubuntu 10.04 or some other gui? If so which one will
you install?

The method to unlock the unit is based on the build number of the android
that you are running. Its sort of like the kernel in linux. For my unit I
go into the settings and at the bottom it tells me the version- i.e.  build
number-  of my android OS. There is a unlock method for the version that I
am running, but if I upgrade to a slightly newer version the unlock is
easier.

a site called android forums has information that can help you unlock the
unit. The android marketplace has the app that lets you run linux alongside
the android after you "root" it.

The only hurdle you might face given your abilities it that most unlock
procedures need a Windows pc to be connected to the tablet.
Almost every one I have looked at requires the PC for the clockwork program.

I can buy last years 8 and 10 inch Android tablets running 1 ghz processors
that will support a 16gb sd card for around $250.00 with 2 USB 2.0 and 2
mini USB inputs. These are the units I want to use in the panel if I can
make this work. They are running Android 2.2 out of the box. If I can
replace that with Linux, Bazinga! The world just opened up for A/C avionics
for under $500.00.

I have a PC with a USB. I also have the keyboard for the Asus ieee transformer
that has the USB ports. I assume you need a USB cable with two male ends.

The build number on mine is HTK75/US_epad-8.6.19-20111107

The kernal version is 2.6.36.3

I found the serial number. It is under settingsstatus!

go figure :) It is also  on one edge edge and not on the back as one
would think.

This is a incredible machine in some ways but it is in severe need of
a good file manager. Folder access and file manipulation sucks.

Hopefully they will fix that with an O.S. upgrade soon.

The android forum is the only way to go.

Actually that rumor has been around for months. I'll believe it when I see it :)
When and if it comes out it better have USB ports. The current transformers USB's are only
on the extra cost key board unit. I won't buy it if it does not have USB's on the main
unit. I'll buy a Toshiba instead. I see little advantage over the current transformer. It
is the O.S. that is serous need of updating.

BTW the file manager is not as bad as I thought after I got used to it.
It turns out in order to fix Robins gmail I have to delete all files added since
new. So I have been copying everything off I can find to USB thumb drives.

The transformer and Honeycomb has has not been around that long.
The customer can always screw things up be it a mechanical device
or software. Engineers and programmers bust their buns to make things idiot proof
and a smarter idiot comes along and somehow figures a new way to destroy it:)
Who would of thunk to have two identical gmail accounts. No wonder the OS
is confused.

The thing I find surprising with your problem is that I access my gmail account from multiple devices, sometimes almost
simultaneously.  I would have guessed that your device would have queried for a new password, and you'd be off on your
merry way.

We solved the problem sort of.
Robin entered an entirely new gmail account with a different name.
Obviously a bug in android. Hopefully it will be fixed when Android
4 comes out.

I will not buy an Asus EeePad Transformer Prime because it does not
have the the USB ports  on the main unit. Only on the keyboard.

Btw the current Asus USB cable only works with a Windows PC for some
strange reason and not with a Linux machine. That is very strange.
Hopefully that too will be fixed in Android 4. I may be forced
to buy a I-pad to run WingX.
