 orientation of your phone depicted as a typical aircraft artificial
 horizon."

 Obviously not gyro-based, just the internal accelerometer. That's a
 seriously fatal flaw.

An accelerometer-based instrument displays the resultant of forces, so a
coordinated turn would show the wings to be level, as the sum of the
gravity vector and the centripetal force of the turn point to the bottom
of the airplane.

That is  assuming steady state but these are rate sensors I think
so the rates are integrated to get position. Check out WingX. I am not
totally
convinced until I see it working in an aircraft.

Back in the old days before GPS airliners used three Honeywell
$100,000 ring laser
rate gyros that got them within a few miles on a trip from SFO to Hong
Kong.

These were not sold to the Russian's :) They were also used in boomers.
Lamar Instruments computerized speed and distance measuring equipment
was used to check them. If a missile missed Moscow it was my fault :)

The Wing-X display requires an external ADHRs. I use Wing-X and the
attitude display is not available from the IPAD sensors. Low-cost MEMS
rate gyros can be used to determine rate of displacement but need other
assist to provide a reliable attitude display.  Dynon and others use
MEMS rate gyros assisted by 3-axis magnetic sensors and a sophisticated
program to derive the display.

I see absolutely no requirements anywhere on the WingX web site
for a DAHRS. All I see is an Ipad and $99 dollars.

Imagine what would happen if you bought the product for $99 and suddenly they
say: "BTW you need a DAHRS system and that will cost you $795."

It was only when I read the AOPA review article was that mentioned.

Surely there is not a mechanical gyro scope in that DAHRS?
