It appears that READ can handle only ASCII data with the DLP
sends out binary. I could be wrong.

I did see a Tcl script somewhere that displays serial data in Hex, which
is good enough for me, because somewhere I have Hex to numeric and Hex
to Ascii routines I once wrote for reading data that poured out of my
old Houston Instruments digitizing pad. I might be able to use that to
test my program,  but it only has an RS-232 connector on it
