Ed,
If you want to have fun with the Porch guys, stuff a GM LS3
into a Beemer3. Use the T56 trans from the Firebird/Camaro and
the diff from a Beemer V12 car. With a bit of port work, a cam
change and tune it is 525HP at the rear wheels. Scare the hell out
of the Porch and blower Mustang guys.
Dale Davies
How about a 690 HP p-port 4 rotor?
Paul Lamar
Yup, that would do it all right. The Government Motors engine
might be a bit more torquey though for street operation. How would
the four rotor engine length be compared to the LS3? No problem
installing in the Beemer as you remove the I6. They tell me the
LS takes 50 pounds off the front end as it is all aluminum and
shorter than the I6 engine that has a cast Fe block, so it actually
handles better.
Dale Davies
It is about the same as LS1.
Max torque is 442 ft pounds at 6200 RPM. Do you want to tow or
do you want to go? :)
Paul Lamar
Well Dale, I have a llittle bigger aspirations, than that government
engine. And as far as the T56 goes, that's old school now. I just
sold the viper version i had. I wanna PDK 7DT doppelkupplung,
based on the original twin clutch used in the 962C. Should be able
to get one soon from a crashed panamera. It'z amazing how some
monied folks love to crash their porsche. Just another fact of the
civilized world.
4 rotors are too much, gotta make em think they can actually beat
ya; so a built 3 rotor turbo should be sufficient when coupled
with a 7DT in the back seat of a 2200lb 914 porsche. And BMW?
BringMoneyWith, cause you're gonna need it when you lose.;)
I now consider myself a reformed engine enthusiast. Thanks to
Paul, and the rest of y'all. So long to the ford/chevy
controversy. Never owned a government car in my life. As long as
we throw the bumdeal president out of office next Nov., we should
all be able to expand developing these rotary things out to their
true potential.
Governmental tyranny will soon be extinct.
Light the candles again!
Happy Hanukkah!
Ed Carver
I am beginning to really like Ed :)
Paul Lamar
How is the length of the 20B compared to the original boxer 4?
Might be a bit tight. A little grease on a shoe horn has been used
before :-)). Even a 13B turbo p-port would be a rocket. 914 6 would
take the 20B no problem due to a longer back for the Porsche lawn
mower.
Used Beemer 3's are reasonable in price. One fellow in Calgary
has a fordor that beats blower Mustangs regularly. They go to the
Porch track days and lap faster.
Dale Davies
You should visit the porcha club endurance events at night at Willow
springs in May, just so you can see the fire come out of the exhaust
on the old turbo 911s that use the original K-Jetronic injection.
Talk about money to burn. Guarantee ya, there would be no era
correct stock bodied 3 series bimers puttn a pass on a built up
944/968 turbo going around turn 8.
Its all in fun though ya know. Tons of money, club racing at it's best.
Ed Carver
Like watching the 917 30K's at Edmonton. Good flame thrower backing off
for a
corner. Donohue in the Penske car leading. Jody Sheckter removed a 5.0l
engine
on Saturday night and put the new 5.4l engine in for the race. Spent the
Sunday AM practice learning where he could put the power down. The German
mechanics were talking in German and swearing in English. I corner
marshelled
there in the '70s.
Dale Davies
O gawd that must have been fun. I was 12 when I got my first sight
of one. They had gigantic turbos on those things. Something more
than 20 years ago, a friend told me to go test drive a 944 turbo. I
could'nt stop driving it for about a year. Never could have imagined
how well one of those cars worked beforehand. Made me a Porsche
enthusiast overnight. Went out and bought all of the related race
car history books shortly thereafter.
Now I wanna fly fast and high. The cozyIV should do it for me.
I just started cutting the 4130 plate for the damper. Should have it
all cut tomorrow. Then I'll create some sort of jig for the welding
part. I plan on using the original flywheel and rolling the edge of
the 4130 like the original where it meets up with the ring gear.
More pics coming soon.
I believe a 20b is a little shorter than the air cooled 911 engines that
are used in the 914. We'll see though.
Ed Carver
The 914 was sold as a volkswagen in europe. Just an fyi.
Here in the US, it was available with the 2 litre base 911T engine, and
called the 914-6. The aircooled 911 engines are on the long side, but fit
well within the same engine bay as the original 912 engine does. In 1972
the type4 2 litre H4 engine was added to the options list. The type4 is the
Vdub van engine.
The lengths of the various engines:
SVX=20"
aircooled 911=22.5"
13B=17
20B=~22.5"~(I don't have one to measure so I added about 5.5" for the extra
two housings). It would easily fit in the 914 engine bay as there is no
cooling fan sticking up on top of the engine like on the 911 engine.
I owned a stripped down 72 914 for a couple years with the stock type4
engine. Very fun to drive, even for an ex moto-crosser. A friend took me
for a ride around the Willow Springs big track in his 914-6 with a 3.6 race
engine in it. [?]No steering wheel to hang on to for the passenger.
Got the damper parts largely cut today. Don't think I can roll the edge of
the 4130 plate. It's too tough at .095 thickness. Gonna try cutting a notch
in the ring gear for it. The 1.25" holes were easy to cut with a hole saw.
