This is what you need for your normal B&W printing.  Get a cheap color
ink jet for your occasional color print job.  You will really be so much
happier with a laser printer than any ink jet printer.  They are fast
and clean and don't dribble ink all over your print jobs, printer,
hands, clothes, or office.  Most laser printers either just keep on
keeping on when they fun out of toner, or they have a setting on the
configuration menu that will allow the machine to just keep on keeping
on when they run out of toner.  Even HP laser printers will print until
the toner cartridge is so empty that blank paper is coming out.

Color printers have to be a bit less forgiving of empty cartridges, even
laser printers, because the color balance will suffer if one or more
colors has run dry.  If you don't want to deal with the color printer
empty cartridge issues, toner or ink, don't use one for printing B&W
print jobs.

I found a nice Epson WorkForce 1100 wide carriage color ink jet printer
at Office Depot for $85.  I bought it to print full scale patterns for
rib cutouts in B&W.  It can print on 11X17 paper.  Most printers that
can handle paper larger than 8.1/2X14 cost several hundred dollars.
It's a USB printer.  When I plugged it into my Linux machine it
recognized it right away.  No need to find or download any driver for
it.  I don't plan to print any color on it so I should have no empty
cartridge issues for many years to come.
