  Dear Mr. Lamar,
  I would like to sign up for a free subscription to you rotary engine
  newsletter.  I
  am currently negotiating the purchase of a Focke Wulf P149D which is
  certified in the
  Experimental Exhibition Category.  A major consideration in the purchase
  would be tbe
  potential to repower this aircraft using a rotary engine.  Currently
  the aircraft powered with a 270hp geared Lycoming GO480 (490lbs dry)
  .  The engine mount in this aircraft is extremely strong (overbuilt)
  and the engine compartment is roomy.  After reading your work and
  examining information available regarding experimental aircraft
  already flying with a 3 rotor 20B turbo, it appears that the
  greatest challenge would be to find a PSRU which would allow /=
  300hp and a constant speed propeller.

  You will need a 3 rotor for that level of HP.
  Yes constant speed hydraulic props are a problem but electric
  versions work. So far Tracy's gear box seems to be holding up in Tom
  Parkes turbo 3 rotor Lancair ES.

  Mild turbo p-port should be capable. Large A/R housing. 3 rotor with turbo
 normalize even better, but more happy cabbage involved.

 When I was at Tracy's a few months ago, I saw and took pics of his RV-8
 with the 3 rotor. No P-Port, no turbo. He said he had enough power that
 full throttle resulted in exceeding Vne quickly. He had no issues, doesn't
 use a large radiator, and was all smiles.

It is not hard to exceed Dick VanGrunsven VNE. IMHO it is set too low.
These are experimental aircraft after all. People are sure to want to improve the
performance and range of their home built aircraft. It is not just merely a way
around the FAA maintenance requirements for certified air craft. Dick needs to beef
up the tails and ailerons on RV's and test for higher Vne's. Most of the composite
kits have no Vne problems. Apparent density/damping characteristics of composites
make them less likely to flutter.
