Hi all!
 Live and learn I guess. I always follow windows update prompts when they
 pop up. Always seems to work.
 A couple weeks ago while using Ubuntu 11.1 an update popup prompting me to
 download Ubuntu 12.4 showed up, and as I always do with windows, I selected
 upgrade.

 Now I have a black screen with the mouse pointer. After some jiggering, I
 got the Ubuntu task bar to show up, but it is displayed as grey icons, none
 of which will open. I can get my image folders to open and show the
 individual thumbnail icons, but those are also represented as grey non
 functional icons. I would just dump it all and start over But, I'm afraid
 all my jpegs will be lost along with other files I need to save.

 How can I save myself? We spent a good two days worth going through Ubuntu
 forums looking for a solution. Nothing we can find leads us to what it will
 take to complete the upgrade or how to get the icons to completely plug
 themselves in.

 Suggestions?

 Try a live 10.04 that boots off a CD or USB stick if you don't have a CD.
 That should save your files. What I do is get a USB one gig drive
 and put all my files on that. Works with any OS.

 Bring it out to the hangar and I will see what I can do.
 Stop at Fry's and get a big USB drive to store them on.

Thanks for your help yesterday Paul.

My beloved wife lamented she did not plug the usb stick in when she tried
to save the files. She did not see an option in the ubuntu OS and therefor
tried the burn to disk method. Ubuntu only shows a "save to" point if the
hardware is plugged in I guess.

I like to stay away from dual boot as it performs some drastic surgery on the boot
sector. Also Henry told me to stay away from the latest updates because they are
invariably buggy. Give it six months to get the bugs out.
