Has anyone managed to do this on a rotary or other auto setup using heat exchangers
    and liquid cooling. I have heard the old piston engine convairs used to use this as a
    way of 1) air cooling the engine very efficiently in a reduced cowling size, and 2)
    using the heat generated through combustion in the exhaust to generate some
    additional thrust,

    Anyone seen this done successfully

    They are called ejectors or augmenters.
    Yes its been done. I discuss this in my "Book How to Cool Your Wankel".

    Early Cessna 310 twin aircraft had similar, they had no cowl flaps,
    harder the engine worked the more air ejected via exhaust augmenters as
    Paul said, down side was they had no mufflers, by choice or if they did
    not work as well with mufflers I don't know.
