I have quite a bit of experience running the 13b on natural gas. In fact Mazda built
13b natural gas engine blocks back in the '90's. There are still some here in my
state still brand new in boxes. I just bought two. During testing when I worked at
RPI the 13b would run 8k -10k on the stock seals. With ceramic seals the time
doubled. The natural gas engines come with ceramic seals and 9.7 compression. Another
interesting thing about the natural gas engines is they run so clean that they have
omitted the trailing ignition. The rotor housings only have one spark plug hole. And
the oil metering is half of a gasoline 13b. So the engine is equipt with two spark
plug distributor and only two line oil metering.
Back in the day we did a test in the field with the Idaho fish and wildlife for an
indian tribe raising salmon. They needed an engine to pump water from the river into
tanks where they would raise the fish and then put them into the river. The engine
had to run for six week straight. The requirements where no engine pollution, no
noise, and no evidence left behind when job was finished. The team parked the 13b on
a trailer near the stream with a belt drive running a pump. A propane take was
delivered to the area and feed the engine. The engine had an audible horn and light
to tell when it was time to add the oil. A local indian tribe member parked a small
trailer next to the engine trailer and kept the engine topped off. Worked great.
