It's a little over a week away.
CONTACT! Magazine has been sponsoring a free fly-in for several
years. It's moved around a little, and last year it moved once
again. This year it will continue to be held in conjunction with the
Golden West Fly-in (as it was last year) in Marysville California
and will be held on Saturday, June 9th, 2012.

The catch? In order for it to be free, you must fly in with an
experimental aircraft that has an "alternative engine" and be
willing to put it on display with the others. This will entitle you
and the occupants who flew in with you to attend the fly-in for
free. And for those of you who has an experimental (data plate
removed) hot-rod Lycoming, Continental, or any number of non-
certified, non-auto conversion engines
(UL, Jabiru, Hirth, Deltahawk, etc.) we consider those an
"alternative engine" too. Please visit

If you are flying-in with an aircraft powered by a Sube, Corvair,
Rotary, Viking, or any other auto conversion and would like to

The trouble with this magazine is it equates automobile piston
engines with rotaries, There is a world of difference when it comes
to aircraft level power durability. Automobile piston engines can
grenade without warning.

Weellll Paul,
That is why you can have your pissa with or without Anchovies. Its
not for everyone. Same for rotor motors. Not for everyone. I must
admit I can not understand why they fight it so much. Boing boing
engines have been around for quite some time and more people can
think they trust them than an unknown to them commodity. Silly boys.

The reason aircraft engines have TBO's is to check for fatigue
cracks. These engines are made with the finest steel available and
with the best manufacturing techniques that are known to increase
fatigue life. This is totally opposite to automotive piston engines
where every nickel is taken out. A result of the low duty cycle. A
400 HP Corvette is using only 40 HP to cruise at 80 MPH.
The rotary engine structure is intrinsically resistant to fatigue.
No in and out. No back and forth. No up and down.

Yup, I am on that page. Some can not get their heads wrapped around it.
Expensive when it starts making bad noises and oil comes out in the air. Some
have not asked themselves what their life is worth.

Here here. V8's sound phat, good for hot rodders, V12's mmmm, but
for pure endurence at max power the perfectionist in me can't deny the
rotary is close to perfect. Growing up in rodding circles the word
rotary was blasphemy. My uncle owns hot rods and is also a L.A.M.E.
when I mentioned rotaries to him he was very quiet, looked over both
shoulders and offered " they are aren't as bad as these guys reckon".
