This software for the Mega Squirt has a good display. It is also tuning
 software but that does not have to be used.

 Many Andriod tablets can be "rooted" and a version of Linux installed.
 The software connects to a computer via a USB cable.

 I also ran across this software. Although it is not open source, the
 price is reasonable.

 Fortunately, my Acer A200 has the Android USB Host capability along with
 an
 micro A/B and an A type USB plug.  So I can hook my PC to it to load the
 Android code and then use the second USB port to talk to an USB-Serial
 MCP2200 translator chip on my project board.  This precludes the need to
 "Root" the tablet.

 First, had to learn the USB layered protocol and then find/build code to
 step through that to find the USB endpoints and finally  work up code to
 transfer data from the project board to the Acer tablet for display.
 Finally got there, but the learning curve was pretty intensive.

 At the moment, Paul - I am working on porting my Electronic Ignition
Commander (EIC) over to the Android tablet.   I currently have data being
displayed on the Acer table from the Pmag ignition system - but only one
Rs232 channel from one Pmag ignition, because I have to use the other Rs232
channel for the USB converter/comm channel and can not use it to comm with
the second Pmag.
But, that just requires a different PIC chip with both USB and two Rs232
ports.  I chose this one to convert first, because I am selling a
considerable number of the EICs to Aircraft Spruce and fewer and fewer of
the EFISM.  But, the EFISM will be next on the list.

I'll take a couple of photos of the screen and send to you - considerable
improvement for the eyeballs over the tiny OLED screen on the EFISM unit.
The USB-RS232 module will work equally well with the EFISM - will  just need
to work up some different data displays in the Android Acer.

I mean 170 mm vs 2540 mm display does make a difference to my eyeball.

  Wait! found some photos of the screens - no data showing, but gives you an
idea of the brightness and size.  The landscape orientation is  approx 9"
Horz and 6" vertical and it will adjust to orientation automatically.  Also
now that I can use character sizes you can see I have context sensitive help
buttons on each page - which can provide multiple pages of assistance and/or
information.

Its going a bit faster as I can some knowledge and experience, but initially
the outcome was in question {:)
