I set one up on the bench. It is in the category of "Inductive Solid State".
I was right about one thing. There is a one shot in there but it only controls how
long the coil is grounded by the switching transistor. 0.2 milliseconds over a wide
RPM range. That is not to say the coil will not ring long after that.
The coil fires when the computer pin goes low.
The rest of the time the coil is charging or heating up from DC current. The coil
itself is .3 ohms but the ballast resister is .5 ohms so that is a lot of current.
About 15 amps. Obviously the ballast resister is switched out on starting.
There is another brown wire that bypasses it. Not shown in the schematic but you can
see it in the pictures.
Here is a schematic with the color codes of the Mazda part.
I replaced the coil with a 25 ohm power resister for testing because I did not want
sparks flying all over the place. Interestingly if the RPM falls too low the system
shuts down. This prevents the coil from over heating while the car is stopped with
the ign switch on.

I'm following all this with great interest and anticipation. In South Africa though,
the 2nd generation RX7 was never imported. The RX7 engines that I have, are engines
only, imported from Japan. Does anybody know if the same 2nd gen coils were used on
Mazda piston engines of that era or later that we can buy in a brokers yard, or scrap
yards as we call them. The same question goes for the automatic gearbox. Would
original part nrs coincide between the rotary and the piston engine?
