Took the engine apart and found the previously mentioned holes in the exhaust port
wide open into the oil pan. Now I have to find a good way to close them. Anyone
having a good idea?

The 12A exhaust inserts are different than the 13B. I would machine a steel rod that
was a slip fit in the holes and weld it in.

It is also possible to get the steel exhaust inserts out by pulling the blind roll
pins that hold them in. Easy outs don't work very well for this purpose as they
expand the pin. If you clean the hole in the pin you can epoxy a piece of wire into
the roll pin and use that to jerk if out.

Another way to try is to fill the roll pin hole with grease and put a close fitting
rod in it and tap it with a hammer. That in theory will force the pin out with
hydraulic pressure.

A third way is to tap the pin but it is usually very hard and that might not work.
