Took the engine apart and found the previously mentioned holes in the
 exhaust port
 wide open into the oil pan. Now I have to find a good way to close them.
 Anyone
 having a good idea?

 The 12A exhaust inserts are different than the 13B. I would machine a
 steel rod that
 was a slip fit in the holes and weld it in.

 It is also possible to get the steel exhaust inserts out by pulling the
 blind roll
 pins that hold them in. Easy outs don't work very well for this purpose as
 they
 expand the pin. If you clean the hole in the pin you can epoxy a piece of
 wire into
 the roll pin and use that to jerk if out.

 Another way to try is to fill the roll pin hole with grease and put a
 close fitting
 rod in it and tap it with a hammer. That in theory will force the pin out
 with
 hydraulic pressure.

 A third way is to tap the pin but it is usually very hard and that might
 not work.

Paul,  I removed the roll pins from my RX-* housings to use the stainless
inserts in the aluminum side housings. I tapped the insert to one side and
used a dremmel cut off wheel to cut the roll pins in two, It took one or
more wheels per roll pin. Once the insert  is out just drive the rest out
with a dry wall screw or punch. The piece in the side iron is a loose fit
and nearly falls out. The insert might need tapped on to get it loose
because of carbon build up between the insert and the side iron.
