Linux Mint with Mate has a severe bug in the desktop switcher.
   That is a feature that I use a lot. That rules out Linux Mint with Mate
   for me.

   I am looking at Fedora 17.

 Hey Paul,

 Consider CentOS instead of Fedora.

 Fedora is a development environment where they try out new software and
 new concepts.  They issue a new release every six months and only
 support there releases for 18 months.

 CentOS is Red Hat Enterprise Linux with all the RHEL branding removed.
 It is supported for 10 years.  You won't find any experimental software
 or stupid stuff like touch screen interfaces for desktop applications.

talking about switching between multiple virtual desktops like the
screenshot.png attached where you can select any one of several virtual
desktops inside the same desktop environment?
