Is it feasible to use a solid case, instead of a split case using inside
snap rings to separate the rotating elements?

In theory yes because the rear flange is bolted on.
But given what I little I know about overhauling
piston engines bearing shells halves are a bit over size so when you torque
the case bolts... the shells compressed slightly and are held securely
in place.
All you piston engine guys out there chime in on this.
The other problem is the oil slinger near the front of the shaft
but there is a work around for that.

Forgive me for my lack of attention to this, but is someone planning on
fabricating a kit or an entire psru that will provide oil pressure to a CS
hub? If so, are there any plans on a governor, and what are they? I would
be interested in a CS psru, seems Mistral is gone to never never
land......I
don't think anyone makes one, that outfit in Canada with the spur gear
drive
did for some time, but seems to have faded.....

You will have to drive the gov with a cog belt off the nose
of the e-shaft.

I seem to recall Continental cs engines had more problems with leak down at
the 'transfer collar' due to their inherent design. Lycomings did not seem
to suffer this as much. I also think I remember the bearing shells are
tanged to keep them in place, and keep the transfer holes lined up. There
are tests to determine when these bearings and the crank have worn too much
to keep the pressure transferred constant.....of course all these engines
are split case engines......guess that's just the way it's been done to
date. I suppose you could make it work in a solid case somehow......

Bearing tangs only purpose is to insure that the shell is placed properly.
Once the shells are clamped with the case, the tangs serve no purpose.

You all are away ahead of me.
Paul has convinced me that the needle bearings are the way to go to take
care of thrust loads. WE have a IO 540 shaft in bound. When we have the
shaft in hand we will take a good look at all of the options. I know Paul
is loaded with projects, and I am getting that way to just learn all the
ends and out of how far along Paul has advanced.
We both agreed that to move along we would start with the 540 shaft, and
from there, the bottom line is, "as an old professor of mine said" "Design
Takes Time". I expect we will butcher several of those before we are ready
to pour and cut metal. Paul is Jeff very busy?
That brings me up to my question. We have located 3.17 6 pinion planets and
will order them on Monday. Paul do we need planet sets from the front end
of the A40D transmission or the tail end? Please let me know soonest.

Just the back planet set. You will have to cut the teeth off of it.
The easiest way of bolting it on is to EDM out the pinion shafts.
That saves the surface finish on the planet shafts.
Find an EDM shop with a hole popper.

BTW Insist that the EDM shop drop the planet carrier in a bucket
of engine oil right after it comes out of the EDM machine.
EDM is extraordinary good when it comes to removing oil films.
You will be amazed how soon it will rust if you don't do that.
