Another fact finding visit with IMS yesterday. All tubes have to be one
inch. Not just D and H. It will add a bit of weight but not much.
It will be a lot stronger.
IMS can read my iges files but Rhino 3 is having trouble with tubes.
I am ordering an up grade to Rhino 4.
The Rhino 4 should be here in a couple of days.
I showed IMS the steel straps and they had no problem with that.
As soon as I get Rhino 4 and get the tubes in separate iges files
I will get a formal quote.
Anybody with solid works out there that can fix a tube
problem?
I send an surface iges.
You load it in SW.
You save as iges solid.

The work around is working pretty good. I got it half done.

Paul, I use Rhino4 and it depends on which command you cut with as to whether
you make a closed solid or open surfaces at the cut point. Solid difference
for example is closed while trim is open whether you trim at the apparent
intersection of a line or use wire cut. Also using split will leave an
open surface. If you trim or cut something and are unsure of the outcome go
to the solids menu and select "cap planer holes" if the required surface is
not planer I go to the curves menu and "curves from object" at the bottom of
the list.
Then you can create edge curves for any 3D shape of inside and
outside of the part and then loft them. If you only need a solid use the
solid difference command. This command deletes the cutting object (the
second solid selected) so I use the transform menu copy command and copy it
to the same place it is.
Usually I just click a blank place on the
construction plane but if you have a convenient corner in 3D space just
select it for both "point to copy from" and "point to copy to."You then do
the difference and still have the cutting object. A related point is to
check that the surface normal's are all pointing outward. It is supposedly
impossible to create and inside out part but if you use "solids union" to
join parts and it balks that is the first place to look. Also when lofting
the default of 10 points rarely seems enough on complex curves so I use 240
or 360 control points to get edges within my .00001 drawing tolerance.

Thanks for the tips George. I am definitely going to upgrade to 4.
Sounds like a large improvement over 3.
For the new guys a good 3D program can save you years of cut and try.
