Alex, with a few changes to the water pump
and intake plenum I can use a simple top mount
and simplify the main motor mount greatly.
You will need to add a hard point to the top of the
firewall at the center. This is a real old idea used
by Power Sport 20 years ago.

Here is what the low cost version of the Tango mount with the
top motor mount. Fewer laser cut tubes and welded joints.
Rotary installation is driven by cost.
I had an idea on how to mod an off the shelf car shock
and convert it to an air spring.
Drill a hole and drain the oil. Tig weld or braze a pipe
fitting on. refill with oil and plumb to an air pressure
can.

You can buy shocks that way now. Takes the fun out of when the shock
will blow up when the oil vapourizes from the heat.

Here are some pics, unfortunately i am not in the USA at the
moment to take more pics but the one pic shows the water pump outlet
mods Milo did, its not a slide throttle on this one, the intake
plenum is on the side of the intake so it should be easier to attach
the top supporting strut to the top of the engine and the top centre
of the firewall, i'd like to turn the intake around and have it
facing relative airflow rather than the firewall, net me a bit of
ram air pressure, I'd also like to look at p-porting as a project
for later down the line once she's flying and proven, but i guess i could
route the pipes around the top MM strut somehow,

What you want is "remote reservoir shocks" for off road apps. I give the

for Bilstein only. Search off road shocks and other manufacturers
will be listed.

Off road should give the weight capacity you are looking for and you
should be
able to vary the air or gas charge in the reservoir for tuning.

The Wheeler board has some info regarding failure of the nose gear from
lateral loads. Specifically, they warn against
parking until the nose wheel is straight. With this info, I have decided
to use 2 shock/spring units in a V shape
instead of one vertical member like the pics in this thread are showing.
This will help support the system laterally
approximately 18 inches from the mounting point helping with side loads,
and allow the use of 2 smaller units instead of
one larger shock.

Everybody has trouble with nose gears including Van. It is because most
pilots land crabbed in a cross wind.

Hi, if the nose wheel is free to caster when it touches down there will
be little or no side force on the gear leg. Many planes have weak nose
gears and should be landed like tail draggers. The nose wheel is such a
crutch for pilots with no foot skills.

I disagree. Landing an airplane sideways when the center of tire
side force is ahead of the aircraft CG is a recipe for disaster.
In the old days they always took off and landed into the wind on large
square grass fields. The coefficient of tire side force as a function of
slip angle was very very low. Especially on damp or wet grass.
