Fortunately I will take the drive out and replace
it with a blank drive and install Mint.

Your plan may not work. Look up Uefi to see why. One site is:

There many web site with more info. You may be able to find a work
around. If you can't I suggest
buying a older computer which has win xp or 7 on it. These ones allow
other operating systems to be installed. IF you do not want win xp or 7
just install a version of linux over the win version and wipe it off. If
you want to keep win on the computer you have 2 options.

1. the ubuntu versions and mint versions installer allow side by side
installations. This assumes enough disk space to partition for both.  20
to 30 gigs for windows at a minimum and 20 gigs for linux. I have been
making 3 linux partitions, 10 gig swap(could beting smaller), 10 gig /
partition and a 20gig or larger /home partition. This allows me to
upgrade the operating system and formatting the / partition and not
formatting the /home partition. Your data on the /home partition will be
saved, however the links to installed programs will be lost but can be
reestablished by reloading the programs via package manager.

2. If you have a computer which has a processor set up for
virtualization ( I think core2 dual on up through i3,i5,i7 have the
hardware). Install virtualbox and install win in the virtualbox. You
will notice very little decrease in speed. There are a few tricks
necessary to get the Usb woirking in virtualbox. IF you go this way,
contact me and I will walk you through it. Or load Teamviewer- it is
free both in linux and win and i can take over your computer remotely
and set it up.

I have a i7 desktop at home with such a setup and both linux mint and
win are very fast. With win you still face the virus/malware problem and
need to load software for this problem.
This is just a quick over view of the problem. Much more detail is
available via google search.

I have done it so far on an Asus K53 and  a Lenova G580 note book computers.
It is tricky but I can't reveal my secrets as I am starting a
biz to install mint in place of Windows 8. $75 cash :)

Anybody want to buy a 320 Gig 2.5" HD with Windows 8 on it ?

I know you don't want to hear this, but my answer is Mac.  I can make my Mac work as a Windows device (I don't), but those with PCs can't do the reverse and run the Mac OS.

The biggest issue with my Mac is the constant updating of the Office Suite of programs.  I virtually never have to install upgrades to the Mac software.

Someday, I will follow Paul into Linus heaven.  I can get that OS for peanuts.  lol
