At your recommendation, I have now installed Mint on the 3 computers
which I use for my daily projects.  I plan on installing Oracle's VBox
so I can run the occasional WinXP application on one of my machines.

I am very pleased with how Mint has turned out.

I had been running Ubuntu 10.04 on two machines.  Updates started
crashing (repository files not found), some accessories were not
supported, the kernel became somewhat corrupted.  A trial upgrade to
latest Ubuntu versions proved that Ubuntu is designed as a plaything,
not a computer.

I came across a few small problems when adding packages, probably caused
by someone using a legacy file name in some install scripts, but in
general, things installed rather smoothly.  I tried to run Mint with the
Gnome interface, but went back to the default MATE interface.  Mate is
somewhat different than Gnome, and I miss a couple of features that I
was used to, but Gnome-under-Mint seems to have some holes it it, so
Mate it is, I guess.

What version number do you have?

Watch out for that Work Space Switcher. Never choose
more than 10 work spaces.
