Detroit Diesel started as GM Diesel prior to WW2. They had a 51 series that
I believe had an integral head. They also produced the 53, 71, 92 series
engines. They also had a 110 engine which was discontinued. I have not seen
the 51 or 110 engines. They also produced 149 and EMD series. The 149
engines were used in construction and marine and some power gen
applications. The EMD series had 645Ci per cylinder for use in trains. Some
were used for power gen. The air box covers I believe were more for core
sand removal from the intake air plenum area, but just happen to be
convenient to inspect the cylinder condition before doing a tune up. They
did also produce an aluminum block 6-71.

Some of the diesel manufacturers used a glow plug and fuel dripped or
injected into the intake to pre-heat for starting. Diesels with a higher CR
start better because of the higher heat of the compressed air at the point
of injection. Detroit Diesel also found better starting with their DDEC
controlled engines due to the ability to retard the injection point to TDC
.
I think Mazda is the only company producing a diesel with a CR lower than
15:1 at this time. They use the VVT feature to introduce some exhaust into
the intake air to help pre-heat it for warm up combined with glow plugs to
get the initial combustion.
