Hi Paul,
Just picking up on this thread, and.. Not sure I've seen the
rational for
"why". That being said, I'm aware that Tracy's current version of
the drive
has no damper (and does not use the flexplate) That is what he is
flying on
the RV-4 and will be changing the RV-8 20B setup to the same.
This comes
with a new limitation... No Metal Props..! (apparently no one is
using them
anyway) Though I'm aware that that is Tracy's direction, I'm not
aware of
the reason to do so...? From an engineering standpoint (which I'm
not by the
way..) I guess I'm in the dark as to the rational. I'm simply a
consumer..
I currently have Tracy's 2:85 with the damper/flexplate
arrangement. I guess
I (as will others) entrust this decision to...???? Tracy is a
pretty smart
guy currently flying a non dampened set-up (again, I've not heard
why)

that this seems to be being made to the market (me and others)
already
possessing drives, so... Perhaps I missed were the collaboration
was to go
in opposite directions. Maybe some who are reading want to see
where your
idea will end up... as Tracy is flying his set-up. That is also
very
convicting. Perhaps as Tracy has made clear... No Metal Props.
Maybe this
is for those doing just that....???(using metal props) I know
what the
recips do to some wood and fiber props (Ivo), but... This is a
rotary and
drive set up, not Cont.'s or Lyc.'s. Just seems to be some grey
area is
all.

I can't read Tracy's mind but the rest of the world has been dealing
with props as well as other high rotational inertia devices
mounted on gear box's
and shafts driven by intermittent internal combustion engines
for a 100 years.
Motor cycle drives are good examples. So too clutch plates in
manual transmission cars. Auto trannies have fluid torque
converters.
Let me know when he has a 1000 hours on it :)
I just bought a $1000 gear box that connects a turbine to a
diesel engine.
Guess what? It has a fluid coupling to deal with the power pulses.
These are used in million mile over the road tractors as in" tractor
trailers".
Tracy has been selling a flex plate drive with ineffective rubber
bushings for years. Rubber is no longer rubber when it is completely
enclosed.
It resonated at 1800 engine RPM. I flew back
from Reno with Dave Leonard in his turbo 13B and I noticed he set
less
than 1800 engine RPM on final approach. Dave is among those
people that have
destroyed flex plates and sheared pins in sun gears.
In some cases heavy flywheels bolted directly to the crankshaft
are used to mitigate the torque pulses. Every automotive piston
engine that
I am aware of uses a torsional damper on the nose of the crank.
The latest is sheared bolts in planetary ring gear bulkheads.

For the record, I've never installed Tracy's drive. I has a Ross unit I'd
sent back to Chris (Ross) years ago, and..he fixed it and... sold it to
someone else.! I was out $2500 bucks and my drive and lost a lot of trust
in this movement.
I love your idea and have waited on each new drawing..etc. I just didn't
(don't) know what's going on. By your comments on using screws instead of
rivets. I'll assume there have been some issues. (?)
The aviation community are great people. I respect your decision in your
approach to this all and am being led that way (will likely be one of your
needed ten) I'm also aware that it seems the right hand and the left may not
know what each is doing... and I get that. We're human.. and frankly I
don't need to know the personals. Was just curious (and you somewhat
addressed that..) in going with a different method to attach the spline.
